Official Beginnings: The SEA-Teacher Opening Ceremony in Lingayen

Yesterday was the opening ceremony for SEA-Teacher Batch 6 at the main campus of Pangasinan State University (PSU) in Lingayen. The journey took about an hour and a half from the Bayambang campus, where we are staying. For this special occasion, we wore our traditional Indonesian costumes; I proudly wore a Songket from Palembang. During the event, we also had the opportunity to go on stage and perform.

The ceremony was lively, featuring various dance and song performances from both PSU and SEA-TVET students. (SEA-TVET is a student exchange program specifically for engineering internships within ASEAN countries). The proudest moment for me was when we sang 'Indonesia Raya'. I honestly don't know why, but I got goosebumps hearing our national anthem resonate in the Philippines. After the ceremony concluded, we processed our student ID cards. Now, we are officially part of the PSU community!
Once everything was finished in Lingayen, we headed back to Bayambang to rest at our dormitory.

Eid al-Adha in Bayambang: Rendang and Roommates

Tuesday, August 21, 2018, was a holiday in the Philippines in observance of Eid al-Adha. Interestingly, Eid al-Adha here was celebrated one day earlier than in Indonesia. Filipinos are very respectful toward Muslims, though we found it difficult to find a mosque near our dormitory, so we couldn't perform the Eid prayer together. While we didn't quite feel the usual "Eid euphoria," we were still very grateful because we got to eat Rendang! My roommate, Chika, brought authentic Rendang from Padang all the way to the Philippines. Thank you, Chika! Since it was a holiday and there were no classes, we went to the supermarket with our Filipino buddies acting as our tour guides.

Afterward, we spent the day cooking together and doing our laundry. We have a "Mama" in our dorm—Yeni from Gorontalo. We call her Mama because she always cooks for us. We also have a "Papa," who is Yo from Thailand. We call him Papa Yo because Yeni loves cooking for the boys in the neighboring unit where Papa Yo stays; she’s actually one of his biggest fans! Our dormitory consists of four units, and each unit has two rooms. My unit is home to Chika, Yani, Shepti, Inez, Yeni, Donna, Uni, Ina, and Tria. Our unit is notoriously noisy because we are all so talkative, but I absolutely love it. Unit 1 is the best! At 8:00 PM, we held a meeting with the Thai and Indonesian students from other units. We discussed our performance for the SEA-Teacher Batch 6 Opening Ceremony at the Lingayen campus. We decided that Chika, Ari, and Suci from Indonesia would sing four songs, and Papa Yo and C from Thailand would also perform.

Meeting Vice Governors and Making Memories in Lingayen

On August 20, 2018, my friends from the Lingayen and Bayambang dormitories and I visited several landmarks in Pangasinan. Our first stop was the Provincial Government of Pangasinan, where we had the honor of meeting the Vice Governor.
The office building was impressive, with a very nice and modern architectural style.
While we were there, I met someone who caught my attention—a very handsome Filipino guy! I really loved his smile; he seemed like such a lovable person. I even managed to capture some photos and videos of him for my Instagram stories. Although some of my friends took pictures with him, I was way too shy to ask! Haha. I hope I can see you again, Kuya Bryan. (For those wondering, "Kuya" is the Tagalog equivalent of "Abang" in Bahasa Indonesia). Next, we visited Princess Urduja’s Palace to learn more about her history. We even went on a room tour of the residence. Afterward, we headed to Lingayen Poblacion to explore the building. While we were there, we happened to catch an event being held by senior high school students.
By then, we were starving since we hadn't eaten breakfast yet, so we stopped for lunch at Mang Inasal. After a satisfying meal, we visited the PSU Main Campus for a campus tour and met the Head of International Student Affairs. Our final stop was the PSU Bayambang Campus, located near our dormitory. We met several professors, lecturers, and our personal guides, whom we fondly call our "buddies." We also had the chance to meet faculty members specializing in different education levels, from elementary to high school. After a long and productive day, we finally returned to the dormitory to rest.

Landing in Manila: Our First Day with the PSU Family

While at the Scoot Airlines check-in counter, we met a new friend from UPI named Minerva—we fondly call her Inez. She was also headed to Pangasinan, Philippines. We continued our journey and boarded our flight to Manila at 12:45 AM on Sunday. We arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) at 6:00 AM and proceeded straight to immigration. Afterward, we waited for Papa Mike from Pangasinan State University (PSU), who was scheduled to pick us up in the PSU bus at NAIA Terminal 1.
Since the Thai and Malaysian students were waiting at Terminal 3, Papa Mike picked us up first before heading there to meet the rest of the group. While waiting, Inez, Yeni, Shepti, Chika, and I had lunch together at Wendy’s and later performed our prayers at the NAIA prayer room on the third floor. Once all the students from Thailand and Indonesia had gathered, we began our five-hour journey to Pangasinan. We were divided into two groups: one staying at the Lingayen campus and the other at the Bayambang campus. I, along with 24 other Indonesian students and two Thai students, was assigned to the Bayambang dormitory. The dormitory is quite comfortable and well-equipped with Wi-Fi, beds, cupboards, a refrigerator, a stove, a TV, and even a washing machine. I am so happy to be staying here and to have met such kind and easy-going friends..

The Journey Begins: From Palembang to Manila

The day I had been waiting for finally arrived. My journey to the Philippines began with a 5:00 AM flight from Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta via Citilink. My uncle accompanied me to the airport, which is only 3 km away from my grandfather’s house. I traveled from Palembang to Jakarta on my own. After arriving at CGK Terminal 1B at 6:00 AM, I took the Skytrain to Terminal 3. While waiting three hours for my next check-in, I met several other students from different provinces who were also heading to the Philippines. I met Yeni, Dona, Chika, Petra, Anam, and Shepti. We introduced ourselves and had breakfast together. Chika, Yeni, Shepti, and I were on the same Scoot Airlines flight at 11:50 AM, which had a 10-hour layover at Changi International Airport in Singapore. We had planned to join a free city tour, but unfortunately, it was fully booked. Instead, we explored Changi, which is truly an amazing airport. We enjoyed many of its facilities, including the sunflower garden, the movie theater, games, and the duty-free shops.

Before having lunch at McDonald's, I exchanged some of my USD for SGD. During our stay, we met many international tourists, including a very kind couple and a gentleman named Mr. Salahuddin from Bangladesh. They shared a lot of knowledge and advice with us. Mr. Salahuddin even gave us chocolates and his business card, and we made sure to take a photo together.
We also met a girl from China who surprisingly could speak Bahasa Indonesia! Finally, we continued our flight to Manila at 12:45 AM on August 19.
